Officials approve car wash near Heritage Village
Warren residents will see yet another car wash added in the area near 12 Mile and Mound roads after the City Council unanimously approved an amendment to the Heritage Village planned unit development agreement on March 26.
The car wash is planned for an area on the Meijer parking area approximately 850 feet north of 12 Mile Road.
The city’s planning commission approved a site plan for the car wash at its Feb. 5 meeting and recommended the City Council approve the PUD agreement amendment to allow construction of the car wash.
The original PUD agreement from 2005 prohibited car washes.
In 2022, the City Council gave its approval for a car wash to be constructed at 5580 12 Mile Road, across the street from the planned car wash on the Meijer / Heritage Village property. Super Car Wash is located at 13 Mile and Mound roads and Ryan
Road Car Wash is within a one-mile radius of the site of the newly proposed car wash.
“Do we really need another car wash?” said Warren resident Joel Vanderlinden during Tuesday’s public hearing. “We have a car wash just north of 13 Mile on Mound, we have another car wash at the old McDonalds on 12 Mile and Mound; is another carwash what we really need?”
Councilman Jonathan Lafferty said he spoke to several residents prior to Tuesday’s meeting and none of them expressed opposition to the car wash.
“I tend to agree with Mr. Vanderlinden’s comments, but Council is not here to determine the economy and what businesses should and should not go into a parcel of land if a developer purchases that land and puts it onto the tax rolls,” said Lafferty. “But I do think we can do better and should strive to have things better than car washes, oil changes and dollar stores.”
Construction is expected to begin on the conveyor style car wash this spring.
