U of M Health buys former Kmart HQ plot
University of Michigan Health will purchase 7.28 acres of vacant land at the former Kmart Corp. headquarters in Troy, where it plans to build a multi-specialty facility on the property.
U of M Health said in a release that it plans to expand clinical services and increase patient access in Oakland County.
U of M Health will purchase the parcel at 3100 W. Big Beaver at Coolidge Highway for $4.42 million from Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC.
“We are thrilled to announce our plans for a long-term presence and commitment to patients in Oakland County, in keeping with our efforts to create a statewide network of care that allows Michiganders the ability to receive our world class care close to home,” said Dr. Marschall Runge, CEO of Michigan Medicine, dean of the U-M Medical School and executive vice president of medical affairs for the University of Michigan.
“We are planning development of a facility that focuses on advanced specialty and diagnostic services. This is a starting point for a broader and deeper U-M Health presence in southeast Michigan.”
U of M Health is the clinical division of Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center of the University of Michigan.
Dr. David Miller, president of U-M Health, said the new center will include a clinical program for multidisciplinary cancer care.
The release said the building will follow university guidelines regarding Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) to minimize environmental impacts.
The former Kmart Corp. headquarters opened in the early 1970s. The headquarters have sat vacant since 2006, when Kmart merged with Sears Holdings Corp. and moved most operations in Troy to the Sears headquarters in suburban Chicago.
Demolition of the building and parking structure began last year.
Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures paid for the demolition, according to a release from the city of Troy.
