A Warren man remains in jail on a $300,000 cash bond after he was charged in connection with shooting over the weekend that left a 24-yearold acquaintance hospitalized.

Derrick King, 37, was arraigned Monday on charges of assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, and two counts of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

Investigators said King is accused of accused of firing 12 shots at the victim, whose name hasn’t been released. The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition at St. John Ascension Hospital in Detroit, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

“The alleged 12 shots fired at an unarmed man walking away, shows a total disregard for human life. We will not tolerate this behavior in Macomb County,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido.

According to police and prosecutors, King and his girlfriend got into an altercation at a party in Detroit on Saturday.

The shooting victim stepped in between the two and began fighting with King, authorities said. At one point, the girlfriend shouted King may have a registered firearm.

The three then went their separate ways.

The girlfriend went to a home she shares with King on Couwlier Avenue, in the area of Groesbeck Highway and Toepfer Road. Investigators said she stayed in her vehicle as King drove up to the house on his motorcycle.

Moments later, the victim pulled in front of the house and got out of his vehicle while King was still standing in the driveway. The two men began fighting and then separated.

As the victim was backing up, King pulled out a gun and allegedly fired 12 rounds at the victim, striking him multiple times, prosecutors said.

According to police, the victim’s intervention in the domestic dispute may have motivated the shooter though one witness told detectives the incident may have stemmed from a physical altercation that occurred between the suspect and victim at a Detroit social club Friday night.

King is also being charged as a habitual third offender.

At an arraignment hearing Monday, 37th Warren District Court Judge Michael Chupa set bond at $300,000 cash/surety, no 10% If King is able to bond out, was ordered to wear a GPS tether and have no contact with the victim.

King is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on April 16 and a preliminary exam is scheduled for April 23. He is being held at the Macomb County Jail.
