Historical society plans to make Sunday super
Vendors who register today get discount fee
Vendors of antiques, crafts, art and other merchandise will help make one Sunday super this summer for the Greater Washington Area Historical Society.
The Greater Washington Area Historical Society is now seeking vendors for its 46th annual Super Sunday Marketplace. Although the marketplace is set to be held on June 2, vendors who register by today can receive the reduced early participation price of $25. After today, cost for vendors to participate will be $50. Vendor applications can be obtained by contacting washingtonmuseum@gmail.com or on Facebook at facebook. com/p/Greater-Washington-Area-Historical-Society-100066537951912.
Vendors of a variety of different types of merchandise, antiques, art and crafts are welcome. They will be set up outdoors in 10 foot by 10 foot spaces, with set up time at 7:30 a.m. Spaces are assigned according to the date the application was received. Vendors must be present for the entire show. They may park in the museum driveway to unload, then move their vehicles to a designated parking area in order to allow for visitor parking. Additional information regarding spaces is forwarded to vendor participants after May 15.
The nonprofit Greater Washington Area Historical Society was organized in 1975. Greater Washington Area Historical Society Treasurer Ira “Jim” Holcomb said that the Super Sunday event became a tradition for the society a few years later. He said that this year the society is interested in doubling the number of vendors it has had at the event in recent years.
“They have to furnish all their own equipment, a tent, a canopy, if they want chairs or whatever,” Holcomb said.
The marketplace will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2 at the Washington Historical Museum, located at 58230 Van Dyke in Washington Township. Super Sunday Marketplace patrons can tour the museum for free.
“We advertise it as selfguided, but we like to have a person of the historical society in each room if there are any questions. There are a lot of little things that I think get overlooked when you have strictly a selfguided tour, because there are stories behind the exhibits that you just can’t explain in a little description,” Holcomb said.
There is no cost to attend the event, which will be held rain or shine, Holcomb said.
“Over the years we have had situations where we had rain and people would come with umbrellas and walk around,” Holcomb said.
Entertainment at the Super Sunday Marketplace will be classic rock music played by the group Malachi Crunch. A silent auction will be held inside the museum during the Super Sunday Marketplace, and outside, patrons can also browse the Orphan Plant Sale. Holcomb said that Pat Hallman operates the plant sale, as she raises plants and takes donations of plants from others.
“We came up with the word ‘orphan’ because they have no home at the time,” Holcomb said.
Proceeds of the Super Sunday Marketplace will benefit the Greater Washington Area Historical Society’s Raise the Roof project, which will replace the historic 1916 museum’s roof. The public can also donate to the roof project by sending in a check to Greater Washington Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 94144 Washington, Mich., 48094. Holcomb said that the society hopes to be able to get the roof replacement project started this summer.
