Gas prices in Michigan set a new 2024-high over the weekend reaching $3.70 per gallon for regular unleaded, according to AAA’s gas report.

Monday it dropped by a penny.

However, the weekend’s high was up 15 cents from a week ago, which is 19 cents more than this time last month but still 2 cents less than this time last year.

“Michigan motorists are seeing higher pump prices, with the state average setting a new 2024-high,” Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group said, in a news release. “If crude oil prices continue to rise, alongside tight supply, then gas prices will likely follow suit.”

Motorists are paying an average of $55 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $3 from 2023’s highest price last August.

In the Detroit area motorists were paying an average of $3.65 per gallon, about 9 cents more than last week’s average and 1 cent less than this same time last year. Areas of Macomb County were averaging about 4 cents higher at $3.69 per gallon.

AAA’s state averages show:

• Most expensive gas price averages: Marquette ($3.83), Jackson ($3.76), Lansing ($3.75)

• Least expensive gas price averages: Traverse City ($3.61), Metro Detroit ($3.65), Grand Rapids ($3.71)

Ways to save on gasoline

• Combine errands to limit driving time.

• Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.

• Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.

• Remove excess weight in your vehicle.

• Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
