Board looking to fill seat left vacant by Xiong
Now that Democrat Mai Xiong has won a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives, Macomb County Board of Commissioners (BOC) will be looking to fill the vacant seat she’ll be leaving behind.
Xiong collected 66% of the vote Tuesday, easily outdistancing her Republican challenger, Ronald Singer, in a special election held April 16. The seat had previously been held by Lori Stone, who was elected as Warren’s mayor in November.
Once the election is certified by the State Canvassing Board and Xiong’s letter of resignation will be accepted by the BOC.
According to the Macomb County Charter, “A vacancy shall be filled by appointment of a registered and qualified elector of the district in which he or she is to be appointed within 30 days by a Majority of Commissioners. The appointee shall take office upon filing the oath of office with the County Clerk after the meeting at which the appointment is made.”
The vacant seat provides an opportunity for a successful candidate to become part of the decision making process in their community.
Chair of the Board of Commissioners Don Brown concurred.
“Serving on the Board of Commissioners has been a gratifying experience, being actively involved, serving my constituents, the businesses and other elected leaders to improve the quality of life in our community,” said Brown. “The services funded by the BOC positively affect the health, safety and welfare of every person in our county.”
“As county commissioners we realize we can’t solve challenges alone so we work with our County Executive, other counties and the federal, state and local units of government to get the desired results,” added Brown.
Those who are interested can now apply for the vacant seat on the BOC.
In order to be considered applicants must be:
• At least 18 years of age
• A U.S. citizen
• Qualified and registered elector of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners District 11. Districts can be verified on the BOC website.
Applications can be found at boc.macombgov. org and are due to the BOC office by 5 p.m. on May 1. No late applications will be accepted. Public interviews will take place at the BOC’s Government Oversight Committee meeting, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 8, 2024 in the BOC Boardroom on the 9th Floor of the County Administration Building at 1 South Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens.
