Boy, 8, shoots self at apartment
Child in critical condition at hospital
An 8-year-old Warren boy is in critical condition after apparently shooting himself in the face with a handgun Friday afternoon.
The child was taken to St. John Ascension Moross in Detroit where he is reportedly undergoing surgery and, according to Warren police, was breathing on his own and responsive to pain stimuli on the way to the hospital.
Warren Police Lt. John Gajewski said the initial investigation shows the child may have found the unsecured handgun inside his residence and shot himself in the head. Both of the child’s parents were home at the time of the incident and investigators are working to determine if the handgun was safely and securely stored.
Warren police and fire units were dispatched to a third-floor apartment in the Cove on 10 complex on Hoover Road north of 10 Mile Road at approximately 3:25 p.m. Friday responding to a 911 call stating an 8-year-old boy had shot himself in the head..
Fire personnel arrived on the scene and immediately observed the child who had shot himself and rushed him to an area hospital with Warren police officers and other officers from Center Line and Detroit blocking intersections along the way.
As of this point in the investigation, police say it does not appear foul play was involved.
Detectives and evidence technicians were on the scene early Friday evening speaking with possible witnesses and collecting additional evidence.
