After two years of leading one of one of largest districts in Oakland County, John Bernia may be returning to Warren Consolidated Schools.

This time around, it appears Bernia’s second stint at Warren Con will be in the superintendent’s seat.

The Warren Con Board of Education announced last week members will interview Bernia at 6 p.m. Tuesday as part of their search for a new leader.

But they’re fairly familiar with him already.

“Dr. Bernia currently serves as superintendent of Walled Lake Community Schools and was selected for interview from a field of six candidates,” a news release issued Friday said.

Bernia was appointed superintendent of Walled Lake in September 2022 after serving as Warren Consolidated Schools’ chief academic officer for six years. He succeeded Ken Gutman, who left the district to become deputy superintendent of Oakland Schools, the regional agency that offers support services to Oakland County School Districts.

While at Warren Con, Bernia supervised and led building administrators, the curriculum department, the special education department, public relations, student services and other duties.

Bernia has also been a teacher during the course of his career.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history, along with a secondary teaching certificate, from Oakland University in 2003.

Bernia went on to receive a Master of Arts in education leadership degree from OU, and doctorate in organizational leadership from the university.

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools has about 12,500 students enrolled in the district.

Earlier this year, Robert Livernois announced he will step down superintendent of the Warren Consolidated School District of 16 years. He said wants to spend more time with his family but will remain in the education field in some capacity.

Livernois, 57, who plans to retire in August, said he leaves knowing district officials have developed an efficient education model and “culture of respect” with the community.

With about 12,600 students, Warren Con is Macomb County’s third-largest district. It serves families in northern Warren, as well as a portion of Sterling Heights and Troy.
