Multiple waterline breaks near power plant repaired

-

Waterline repair work on North Kihei Road fronting the Maalaea Power Plant on Friday disrupted traffic and water service, the county Department of Water Supply said.

Crews were working on three to four waterline breaks and blocking the southbound lane of traffic on North Kihei Road, the department said.

Water was to be turned off for about eight hours Friday, though the department did not know exactly how long the work would take. Customers in Maalaea and along North Kihei Road may experience low water pressure and were asked to conserve water while the breaks are being repaired.

At 6:30 p.m., county spokesman Brian Perry said the work on the waterline breaks and the lane closure still were continuing. He asked that Maalaea residents conserve water.

Perry said that firefighters battled a large wildfire in the area Thursday, protecting the Maalaea Power Plant. But the department could not say if the break was related to the firefighting efforts.
