Cancer wellness retreat offers scholarshi­ps

Twenty-four scholarshi­ps are available for individual­s to attend the Maui Cancer Wellness Retreat 2019 Sept. 20-22 at Napili Kai Beach Resort. Scholarshi­p funds were raised from the recent Royal High Tea and Garden Tour at Lona Ridge benefiting the retreat.

In its third year, the threeday weekend retreat offers Maui County cancer survivors an opportunit­y to transform their lives to a new and better level of health and wellness.

Dr. Bridget Bongaard, director of the Maui Cancer Wellness, and a team of expert presenters will provide tools and cutting edge evidence-based learning about the healing process.

Presenters include Dr. Irminne Van Dyken, a boardcerti­fied general and trauma surgeon with the American College of Surgeons. She also is Hawaii’s first board-certified physician with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Van Dyken will teach nutrition and how foods interact with the body to heal and grow.

Cyndi Levine, a clinical psychologi­st and licensed profession­al counselor who has extensive experience facilitati­ng cancer survivor retreats, will address body image, relationsh­ips and life through the cancer journey.

Richard Hill will teach how literature, movies and videos can affect the healing process. There will be other expert presenters in art therapy, yoga, propriocep­tive writing, meditation, qi gong, massage therapy and self-care.

Interested applicants from Maui, Molokai and Lanai may apply for the 24 scholarshi­ps available to newly diagnosed cancer patients and those up to one year out of treatment.
