William John Haywood

William John (Bill) Haywood passed away peacefully with family and friends the evening of July 10, 2019 at his home in Lahaina. He will be missed.

Bill was born January 26, 1953 at Puunene Hospital to Dr. Guy S. and Anita B.

Haywood. He attended Kaunoa School, Kahului School and Hawaii Preparator­y

Academy in Waimea, Hawaii before leaving Hawaii to attend the University of

California, Santa Barbara. While at UCSB, Bill earned University awards and recognitio­n for his performanc­e as a swimmer.

He began his career in Lahaina as a waiter at Kimo’s in January of 1980 and worked his way up to a Manager for T.S. Restaurant­s when he retired 21 years later.

His second career took him to Maui Jim, Inc., in Lahaina where he worked for the next 20 years. At the time of his passing he was the Director of Operations.

He enjoyed all activities related to salt water. He excelled at surfing, body surfing and spear and sport fishing. His ashes were scattered off of Molokini on July 20,

2019. He joined other family members who predecease­d him, his father and mother,

Guy and Anita Haywood, his sister Anne L. Haywood, and his brother James R.

Haywood. Celebratio­ns of his life were held Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Shark Pit and Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Fleming’s Beach in Lahaina. A big person, a big heart, he got two celebratio­ns.

Bill is survived by his long-time friend, Carol Michelson, daughter, Christa J. Edwards (Erik), sons, William C. (Bula) Haywood, James M. (Montana) Haywood and grandson, Colin Edwards. He is also survived by his brothers, Guy A. (Christina) Haywood, and Fred W. Haywood, both of Kula. His numerous nieces and nephews include, Erin M. Haywood, Guy C. (Kale) Haywood, Crystal (Nilsson) Panis of Maui, Hawaii, Christina L. Haywood of Bend Oregon, Skyler ( Susan ) Haywood of New Zealand, Meryl Haywood of Denver, Colorado and Evan Haywood of Long Beach, California. His dog “Duke” was considered one of his children.

Special thanks to the Lahaina and Peoria, Illinois staff of Maui Jim Sunglasses, Walter Hester, Ruthie Beldon and Captain Seth, Captain Kenny and crew of the Maui Jim. Thank you to T.S. Restaurant­s, specifical­ly Leilani’s Hula Grill, Kimo’s, Dukes Maui, and all the employees who participat­ed in the Celebratio­n of life. Thank you George M. Martin, M.D., Dr. Norm Estin, the Kaiser Physicians and staff of Maui Memorial Hospital and Hospice Maui.

Special thanks to Jenn and the Williams family, Kenny and Debbie Sinclair, Jack Starr and all others who supported Bill and family during his illness.

Countless others supported Bill and his family during his illness and made the Celebratio­ns of Life the unique and timeless experience­s they were. We thank you all as well.

Bill had a zest for life and a spirit which overflowed into everything he did and everyone he met. Everyone who knew him has a “Bill Experience” they recall with fondness.

We miss Bill. Our memories of him will burn bright forever. The Haywood Ohana
