Salons to offer free back-to-school haircuts
Free back-to-school haircuts for children ages 6 to 12 will be offered July 26 in Lahaina.
Six hair salons and 15 hairstylists are participating in the event starting at 10 a.m. at Lahaina Loft, 736 Front St.
Haircuts will be done by appointment only, with no walkins.
“We’re putting this gratitude event on because we really want to give back to our community and students to get them excited to once again get back to school,” said Adiel Cline, founder of Hawaii Salons Forum and owner of Salon 253 in Wailuku. “We want to show our community that believed our industry could open safely, you are safe at salons.”
People can make appointments online at www.hawaii salons.org.
The event was organized to comply with state and county guidelines to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, with staggered appointment times to ensure social distancing, Cline said.
Entry to Lahaina Loft will be through Front Street, with exit through Luakini Street.
Those with appointments will be asked to wait outside or in a car until they’re notified a chair is open for them. Only one adult can accompany each child and masks are required.
People are asked to comply with state and county COVID19 requirements including using hand sanitizer or washing their hands upon entry and submitting to temperature checks.
The participating salons are Salon 253, Lahiwa Beautique, O’Carney’s Barber Shop, Three Sixteen Haven, Mirror Mirror Salon and Hair Hale.
A donation of nonperishable food items for the Maui Food Bank is encouraged but not required.
For those who can’t make it to the event, Salon 253 in
Wailuku and Mirror Mirror Salon in Makawao will offer back-to-school haircuts for those ages 6 to 12 at a discounted price of $20 until Aug. 15.
Cline said the event was meant to help students get ready for school after the abrupt school closure in March.
“Whether it be that of distance learning or face to face, we want to make sure we as an industry can help in making their first day of looking their best,” she said. “This might be the most anticipated first day of school ever.”
