Edith Shinayo Hiraga, 97, of Wailuku passed away peacefully on January 7, 2022 at Hospice Maui. Her family would like to offer a special thank you to Evelyn Carino and her family for taking amazing care of Edith for the past four years. The family also extends its deepest appreciati­on to Hospice Maui for the care and services provided to Edith during her stay with Evelyn, and for the compassion­ate care at Hospice Hale.

Edith was born in Puunene, Maui on April 11,1924 to the late Sagenda and Koshige Nakayama (Komasaki). She worked at Ikedas clothing store in Lahaina as a supervisor. She enjoyed singing, dancing, cooking, taking care of her plants, and spending time with her family. Edith always called herself the “kolohe aunty” and loved to joke around with anyone who would talk with her. She loved desserts, especially ice cream, but within her family she was known for her beef stew, spareribs, and chives tempura.

Edith is predecease­d by her loving husband, Suetoshi “Duke” Hiraga and siblings Ayako Hazama, Kenso Nakayama, Jean Saito, Sajima Nakayama, Haruye Nakayama, and Yoshiko Ouchi

Edith was loved by so many and leaves her memories to son Roy (Gwen) Hiraga and daughter Jayne (Ralph) Norman; two grandchild­ren Kacie and Bradey; and sister Dorothy Mansho, along with many nieces, nephews, grandniece­s, and grandnephe­ws.

A private service for Mrs. Hiraga was held on January 21st, 2022 at Wailuku Jodo Mission. Her family requests no koden.
