Man accused of shoplifting a day after he was released from jail

-

WAILUKU — A man who was released from jail Tuesday when he pleaded guilty to exposing himself to a girl at a Lahaina park was arrested Wednesday for allegedly shoplifting from a Lahaina store.

Gregory Gold, 54, who gave no local address, was sentenced Tuesday to a six-day jail term as part of one year’s probation after he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault. Another charge of fourth-degree sexual assault was dismissed as part of a

plea agreement.

Gold exposed his private parts to a 15-year-old girl April 28 at Library Park on Wharf Street, said Deputy Prosecutor Jeen Kwak. She said the girl was alarmed by what Gold did.

Gold, who already had spent six days in jail, was released from the Maui Community Correctional Center on Tuesday. He was ordered not to possess or consume alcohol or illegal drugs.

On Wednesday morning, Gold was arrested and charged with fourth-degree theft after an employee of Badass Coffee store at 671 Front St. reported seeing him hide a bag of macadamia nuts in his pocket and leaving the store without paying, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charge. The employee told police Gold had gone into the store between 6:30 and 7 a.m. and asked for water.

The bag of macadamia nuts, valued at nearly $17, were recovered from Gold and returned to the store when he was arrested at 7:41 a.m.

Gold pleaded not guilty to the theft charge Thursday in Lahaina District Court, convening in Wailuku.

Deputy Prosecutor Frank Loyd Jr. asked for bail to remain at $100 for Gold.

“We strongly object to any kind of release,” Loyd said, noting that Gold had been sentenced two days earlier for fourth-degree sexual assault.

Judge Michelle Drewyer kept bail at $100.
