Charity walk raises over $1M in updated count
The 43rd annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk in Maui County exceeded its $1 million goal for the sixth year as more than 1,300 walkers gathered to help raise funds for local nonprofits.
Held on Aug. 20 by the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association, the event raised $1,063,027, according to a news release last week. Preliminary reports had put the total at $960,000, but funds have continued to roll in since then, the news release said.
One of the largest single-day fundraisers in the state, the event was held simultaneously this year on Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii island.
In 2021, Maui County raised more than $1.2 million, which benefitted hundreds of local nonprofits. For the last 13 years, Maui has raised more money than any other county, according to the news release.
Since 1980, when the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association began hosting the event, Maui residents have raised a cumulative total of $17.6 million, all of which remains in the county.
“Our industry remains committed to providing for and
positively impacting the lives of our residents of Maui County,” said Lisa Paulson, executive director for the association. “We are thrilled to have surpassed the one-million-dollar mark for the sixth year. The additional
funds enabled us to award significant and valuable funding to worthy Maui County organizations. The range of services of these recipients touches many residents’ lives from children to the elderly,
from athletic organizations to service-related agencies, from health to housing.”
