West Maui Hospital official to give update on project
An official with the future West Maui Hospital and Medical Center will discuss the project’s status during a Maui County Council committee meeting on Monday afternoon.
Brian Hoyle, president of the West Maui Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, will provide an update at the Human Concerns and Parks Committee meeting that starts at 1:30 p.m., Council Member Tasha Kama, who chairs the committee, announced.
“This presentation will provide important information and background for all who have been awaiting news on the West Maui Hospital project,” Kama said in a news release Wednesday. “The development of this medical facility will help address a major shortage of health care resources in West Maui and offer residents and visitors acute care and skilled nursing on the West side.”
The project site is just under 15 acres and is located along Kakaalaneo Drive in the master-planned community of Kaanapali 2020.
A groundbreaking was held for the hospital in 2016, but the project stalled years later as officials struggled to find a partner and financial backing.
Residents and officials have long advocated for the facility that would help provide health care services to a community located about 45 minutes away from Maui’s only acute-care hospital.
Other West Maui Hospital Foundation board members include Stephen Lovelette and Jo Anne Johnson Winer, who formerly held the Maui County Council’s West Maui residency seat and is also the former Maui County director of transportation, according to the news release.
The meeting will be broadcast live on Akaku channel 53 and on the Maui County Council’s Facebook page.
