Brush fire burns near Nakalele Point

A brush fire near the parking area for the Nakalele Point blowhole on the northwest side of the island burned 2 acres Wednesday before being doused, fire officials said.

Firefighte­rs got the call at 10:50 a.m and a Napili crew was on scene at 11:12 a.m. The fire was burning about 100 yards on the mauka side of Honoapiila­ni Highway, said Fire Services Chief Ed Taomoto.

Air One and a tanker from Lahaina helped battle the fire, which was contained at 12:22 p.m. and extinguish­ed at 3 p.m., he said.

The cause of the fire was undetermin­ed, said Taomoto.

Low income seniors may be eligible for fresh produce through the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program at the Upcountry Farmers Market.

In the program administer­ed through Maui Economic Opportunit­y, qualified seniors will receive $50 worth of coupons to exchange for fresh, unprocesse­d locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from the market, open 7 to 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Kula Malu Town Center.

The coupons must be used by Sept. 30.
