New farm-to-ta­ble Moku Roots restau­rant opens in La­haina

New restau­rant Moku Roots has opened in La­haina, ac­cord­ing to an an­nounce­ment.

It is a zero waste, farm-to-ta­ble, veg­e­tar­ian/ve­gan restau­rant, lo­cated at 335 Keawe St., No. 211. Its phone num­ber is 214-5106 and web­site, www.moku­roots.com.

The restau­rant uses pa­paya stems from its farm as straws, and all to-go food is wrapped in taro leaves.

“We are try­ing to in­spire change within peo­ple and the restau­rant com­mu­nity to be more mind­ful of waste by prov­ing it’s pos­si­ble to cre­ate amaz­ing food without sin­gle-use plas­tics,” the an­nounce­ment says. “With this restau­rant and our fu­ture restau­rants, we are go­ing to shift the par­a­digm of waste­ful­ness of the restau­rant in­dus­try by prov­ing it’s pos­si­ble and set­ting an ex­am­ple for oth­ers to fol­low.

“Our abil­ity to tweak ev­ery­one’s fa­vorite recipes to fea­tur­ing ulu and kalo and other lo­cally grown pro­duce in lieu of im­ported Main­land pro­duce is also help­ing keep Maui dol­lars in Maui and help­ing main­tain a vi­brant lo­cal agri­cul­ture.”

Menu items in­clude Maui-grown jack­fruit pot stick­ers; gluten-free, ve­gan brown­ies; and a taro burger, the restau­rant’s top seller.
