Sen. Hirono is right to seek better solutions

-

To those of you who wrote that Sen. Mazie Hirono was mean and you don’t think she’s like you — did she trap you in a room, pin you down, sexually assault you and muffle your screams while another person watched? No. You were asked to shut up and step up. You were asked to listen to the victims. In response, you send a letter to the editor and proclaim you are very upset. She used an angry voice, and you think she should be punished.

Sen. Hirono is calling attention to the experiences girls and women have multiple times throughout their lives of unwanted and unwarranted interactions initiated by men who take liberties that are absolutely not guaranteed by our Constitution.

Sen. Hirono is working for change. There are too many crimes against girls and women. Your response is to indignantly proclaim she sounded angry, and you don’t like that one bit. Given the constant flow of arrogant, self-centered, boorish, hateful, angry behavior and messages from the man you chose for the White House, your cries for civility do not ring true.

Nevertheless, you are cordially invited to come up with better solutions to the many forms of violence, assault, intimidation and suppression directed at girls and women throughout their lives.

Sen. Hirono is right to seek better solutions. Changes are long overdue. If you truly are one of the many good guys, please send in your letters and share your ideas. Coleen Ashworth
