25- to 35-foot surf expected on north shore

Big waves to last through Sunday

A high-surf warning has been posted for north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai and west-facing shores of Molokai through Sunday night with wave heights expected to reach 25 to 35 feet, the National Weather Service said.

A large northwest swell is forecast to build rapidly this morning and generate the large surf, the weather service said. The swell is expected to peak this evening and hold into the night before gradually subsiding Sunday.

The warning is in effect from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Sunday.

A high-surf warning means that dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline and will result in very dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents. Expect ocean water surging and sweeping across beaches, coastal benches and lava flows.

A small-craft advisory is up until 6 p.m. Sunday for the Kaiwi Channel, between Molokai and Oahu. Easterly winds are expected to be 6 to 17 mph and seas 10 to 15 feet, the weather service said.

The forecast for today through Wednesday is mostly clear at night and in the mornings and partly cloudy with isolated showers afternoons and evenings. Temperatures will range from 84 degrees to 66 degrees. Variable winds of 5 to 15 mph are expected.
