Credit union is offering help to federal workers

Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, which has members on Maui, is offering assistance programs for members who are federal government employees and other workers affected by the partial shutdown.

The credit union with 106,000 members on Oahu and Maui announced Monday the following programs:

≤ Emergency personal loans of up to $5,000 with no interest or payment required for the first three months of a 27month term.

≤ Loan payment deferrals of up to three months on existing personal and auto loans. Late fees will be waived.

≤ Term share early withdrawals of share certificates. The minimum withdrawal is $500 and early closing fees will be waived.

To qualify, individuals must have been a member of the Hawaii State FCU as of Dec. 22, the start of the partial shutdown. Federal government employees must show proof of employment with pay stubs dated Dec. 22 or later.

Nonfederal government employees must have a letter from their employer stating there’s a payroll reduction due to the federal government shutdown, sequential pay stubs to show income before and after the furlough and a statement from the member saying that his or her income has been reduced due to the shutdown.
