Man pulled from waters off Honolua Bay

Woman off D.T. Fleming beach rescued Sunday

A local man in his 50s was pronounced dead after he was pulled out of the waters at Honolua Bay late Saturday afternoon, a Maui Fire Department official said Monday.

Fire crews were called to Honolua Bay at around 5:15 p.m. Saturday for reports of an unresponsive surfer who was brought to shore by fellow surfers, Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said.

Fire and paramedics arrived on scene and attempted lifesaving efforts. The victim was transported by ambulance and later pronounced dead, Yatsushiro said.

The incident was among multiple calls that Maui Fire Department personnel, including Maui County Ocean Safety officers, responded to over the weekend as large surf was reported on the northwest shoreline, Yatsushiro added.

On Sunday, a 35-year-old Maui woman sustained minor cuts and bruises after falling into the ocean in the area of Honokohau Bay, Yatsushiro said. Around 1 p.m., firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel responded to a call of a female who fell in to the ocean while hiking.

Engine 11 from Napili responded by land, while an Ocean Safety personal water craft also responded via D.T. Fleming Beach.

The victim was able to stay afloat and swim out to deeper water, which kept her safe from large surf impacting the shoreline, Yatsushiro said.

The woman was located and picked up by the watercraft about a quarter mile from shore. She was brought to shore at Honokohau Bay.
