Trout sidelined for Cubs series as he recovers from groin strain

-

Mike Trout has been ruled out for the Los Angeles Angels’ weekend series against the Chicago Cubs after he strained his right groin during the team’s last homestand.

Trout visited Dr. Steve Yoon on Friday in Los Angeles. Angels general manager Billy Eppler said imaging showed a reduced amount of swelling.

“Mike also reports daily improvement,” Eppler said in an emailed statement. “He will continue treatment in Anaheim and he will be re-evaluated on Sunday.”

Trout first felt discomfort after working out Tuesday. The injury flared up while he was running to second base in the second inning of the Angels’ win over Milwaukee that night.

Manager Brad Ausmus said the team doesn’t think Trout will need a stint on the injured list. He could rejoin the Angels for their next series in Texas.

■ YANKEES: New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says right-handed reliever Dellin Betances will get a cortisone shot in his right shoulder today, which will keep him out another six to seven weeks.

Cashman announced that news Friday night, hours after New York revealed catcher Gary Sanchez has a strained left calf. Sanchez became the 12th New York player added to the injured list.

Betances opened the season on the IL after dealing with inflammation in his shoulder during spring training. Cashman said after a rain-shortened 9-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox that oral anti-inflammatories did not solve the issue, a determination made after Betances struggled through a simulated game Thursday.
