Council to hold public hearing on property tax rates

The Maui County Council will hold a public hearing on real property tax rates for fiscal year 2020 at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers on the eighth floor of the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku.

Mayor Michael Victorino proposed his version of the rates during his budget presentati­on in March. The council, which is currently reviewing his proposal, has yet to adopt rates and its version of the budget. The full council has until June 10 to take action on Victorino’s proposed budget, otherwise the mayor’s version becomes law. Fiscal 2020 begins on July 1.

The following are the current property tax rates, the rates proposed by Victorino and a range of rates to be considered by the council. All rates are per $1,000 of assessed value.

≤ Residentia­l — $5.52, $5.52, $4.24-$6.70.

≤ Apartment — $6.31,

$6.31, $5-$7.45.

≤ Commercial — $7.25,

$7.39, $5.60-$8.39.

≤ Industrial — $7.45,

$7.48, $5.69-$8.48.

≤ Agricultur­al — $6,$6, $4.66-$7.09.

≤ Conservati­on — $6.35, $6.35, $4.80-$7.35.

≤ Hotel and Resort – $9.37, $9.60, $7.71-$16.41.

≤ Timeshare — $15.41, $13.93, $12.93-$16.41.

≤ Short Term Rental — $9.28, $9.55, $8.28-$16.41.

≤ Homeowner — $2.85, $2.85, $1.66-$3.95.

≤ Commercial­ized Residentia­l — $4.55, $4.55, $3.35$5.75.

Each testifier will be allowed to speak for three minutes. The council may also take testimony from each of the district offices. Written testimony must be emailed to county.clerk@mauicounty.us or faxed to (808) 270-7171 at least 24 hours prior to the hearing to ensure distributi­on. If written testimony is submitted at the hearing, 15 copies are requested.

Public access will be available at the first-floor entrance. Individual­s planning to attend the hearing may use the lower parking lot adjacent to the building.
