Maui Film Festival celebrates 20 years of bringing light, love and hope to Maui movie buffs

Maui Film Festival presents meticulous­ly curated films that remind us that, despite all of our difference­s, humanity still reigns supreme. While the festival opened June 12, there are still more than 20 feature films and 20-plus shorts screening between today and Sunday at the renowned Celestial Cinema in Wailea and Castle Theater at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, as well as two free premieres open to all at Toes in the Sand Cinema at Wailea Beach on Friday.

TONIGHT

An astonishin­g film about a star being born as Jessie Buckley leaves Scotland for Nashville to become a country music singer — even with two kids in tow.

“THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON”

Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and newcomer Zack Gottsagen co-star in this delightful story about a group of mostly harmless misfits who decide to help a hospitaliz­ed, marginally mentally handicappe­d patient chase his dream of becoming the first mentally challenged profession­al wrestler.

Features intimate interviews with survivors and family members, this special presentati­on looks at the churchgoer­s gunned down during prayer service in Charleston, S.C. after a 21year-old white supremacis­t opened fire in Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church killing nine African Americans and leaving their families and the nation to grapple with this senseless act of terror.
