Thoughts about ‘death doulas’ and the Maui County Council

Why, all of a sudden, is every fourth white woman on Maui a “death doula” — a self-professed modern-day “saint” who helps people pass on to the other side? When did this become “a thing?”

Our local government may be criminally negligent regulating things like the booming “Death Doula Industry” or the infamous “Potty-Training Boot Camps” of a few years ago. Not to mention the blind eye turned toward the Catholic Church and Kamehameha Schools over the past few decades.

Too bad our County Council members are so busy arguing for equal pay — they want the same pay as the mayor. They have no problem lining their own pockets, at our expense.

With this “New-Age/Christian/Community-Organizing/Socialist/Feminist Gang-Of-Five” at the helm, they have proposed raising taxes and increasing the county budget to new dizzying heights!

In 2002 the county budget was around $350 million. Now it is around $850 million! Do you know where all that extra money comes from? Your ever increasing taxes. Land tax. Gas tax. Road tax. Sales tax. And our ever increasing fees. Auto registration fee. Parking fees. Application fees. Copy fees. Camping fees. Dumping fees.

And they give almost half of it away to “nonprofit” organizations like The Boy Scouts of America, The Maui Humane Society and The Maui AIDS Foundation. And they are building houses for the homeless and providing food for the hungry. Sometimes helping is hurting.
