Heredia arrested for robbery and property damage

Police arrested a 26-yearold man for robbery after he allegedly smashed windows of a Paia residence while threatening a woman and demanding the keys to her car, police said.

Kaile Heredia of Makawao was charged with second-degree robbery, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening, fourth-degree theft and third-degree criminal property damage.

Police were called after the victim was awakened while she was with three young children in an ohana unit on Baldwin Avenue between 1:50 and 2 a.m. July 7. She told police she saw a man outside holding a mattock hand tool, similar to a pickaxe, and demanding the keys to her car. The man used the tool to smash two windows of the ohana before the woman threw out her car keys, according to police.

The man took the keys and left in the car, a gray 2018 Nissan Sentra.

The car was found abandoned nearby.

Later that day, after police saw someone matching the description of the robber, Heredia was detained and identified as the suspect through a photo lineup.

Heredia waived his right to a preliminary hearing when he appeared Monday in Wailuku District Court after the prosecution reduced the robbery charge from first-degree robbery and eliminated a first-degree arson charge, said Deputy Public Defender Tyler Stevenson.

He said Heredia has been a Maui resident since age 4 and doesn’t have a criminal record except for a conviction for failure to appear.

The defense and prosecution agreed to recommend that Heredia’s bail be reduced from $53,500 to $27,000.

Judge Blaine Kobayashi granted the request to reduce bail for Heredia.

The judge left in place previously ordered conditions, including that he have no contact with the victim and stay at least 100 yards away from her place of residence and employment. Heredia was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to report for supervision and random drug testing if he posts bail to be released.

He is scheduled to be arraigned July 22 in 2nd Circuit Court.
