Arreola breaks eight national records en route to wins
It’s been a busy two weeks for star archer Liko Arreola.
The Makawao teen added to her trophy case and put her name in the record books several times while competing in two events on the Mainland, first at the JOAD Target Nationals in Decatur, Ala., and then at the National Field Archery Association National Roundup in Yankton, S.D.
At the JOAD Nationals, held July 8-10, Arreola placed first in the compound cub qualifications and won the gold in the elimination matches. Despite a lot of weather delays from lightning, the 13-year-old managed to break two national records. Her score of 718 for the 30-meter round beat the previous record of 714, and her 30-meter double round of 1,435 bested the old mark of 1,419.
The following week, she and her family drove up to South Dakota for the NFAA Roundup, which consisted of three different tournaments — three days of field, hunter and animal rounds; two days of the First Dakota Classic; and two days of the Outdoor Target Nationals (600 and 900 rounds).
Arreola placed first in all three tournaments for her division of Youth Female Freestyle and broke six national records. She scored a 549 for the field round (previous record was 546); 555 in the hunter round (545); 578 in the animal round (577); 596 in the Outdoor Target 600 round (589); 898 in the 900 round (890); and her 1,494 total at the Outdoor nationals topped the previous record of 1,467.
Arreola, who has previously won numerous national and tournament titles and set national marks, earlier this summer competed against older competition at the SoCal Showdown in Chula Vista, Calif. In the compound cadet women division, Arreola led qualifying with a two-round total of 685 before winning finals with a score of 147.
