Broncos Pro Bowler Chubb needs another ankle surgery

-

Broncos Pro Bowl linebacker Bradley Chubb needs surgery to remove bone spurs from his left ankle just four months after undergoing a similar surgery on his right ankle.

Chubb said in a video posted on the team’s website Tuesday that with the Broncos (2-0) in the midst of a resurgence, he’s going to work hard to get back this season.

“When this thing is healed up I expect to see a whole new Bradley Chubb, a whole new animal, a whole new dog,” Chubb said. “I feel like 2018 was my last full year healthy and I feel like when I’m done with this it’s going to be 10 times that and really excited just to see everything that comes full circle.”

Chubb left Denver’s 23-13 win at Jacksonville in the first half Sunday after feeling a stabbing pain in his left ankle while trying to get to Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

“It was during that 2-minute drive I just tried to run the corner and I felt it wasn’t all the way there,” Chubb said. “I’ve been dealing with this bone spur I’ve got in my ankle and sometimes when I try to turn the corner it gets a little annoying and it feels like a stab-type pain.”

Chubb missed the opener against the New York Giants because of the injury. He and Von Miller have played 21 games together out of a possible 50 since John Elway selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 draft.

Chubb came back from a torn ACL in 2019 to earn his first Pro Bowl berth last season, but he missed the final two games with a right ankle injury. In May he underwent surgery to remove bone spurs and missed most of the offseason program.

■ TEXANS: Rookie Davis Mills will start at quarterback for the Houston Texans on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers with Tyrod Taylor out with a hamstring injury.

Coach David Culley announced the decision Tuesday and said Taylor would be inactive. Later Tuesday the Texans placed Taylor on injured reserve which means that he must miss at least three games.

Culley said the Texans plan to promote Jeff Driskel from the practice squad to back up Mills against the Panthers.

Deshaun Watson was not an option to fill in in the wake of Taylor’s injury after Culley said Monday that he would be inactive for Thursday’s game just as he has been for the first two games.

Watson has been listed as inactive/not injury-related following his trade request and after 22 women filed lawsuits alleging sexual assault or harassment.

■ BROWNS: Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry will miss at least Cleveland’s next three games after being placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a sprained knee ligament.

A model of consistency and durability in his NFL career, Landry got hurt during Sunday’s 31-21 win over the Houston Texans.

Because of his injury, the five-time Pro Bowler’s streak of catching at least two passes ended at 111 straight games — the fourth-longest streak in history.

■ SAINTS: Smoke and flames shot up the side of the Superdome’s roof on Tuesday after a pressure washer being used to clean the roof of the New Orleans sports and entertainment arena caught fire.

The New Orleans Fire Department confirmed firefighters responded to flames on the building’s roof shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time. The fire appeared to be under control a short time later.

New Orleans Emergency Management Services said on Twitter that they were transporting one person to the hospital for “minor burns.” Emergency officials called on people to stay away from the area.

Crews were power washing the roof this week to prepare it to be painted, officials said.

The New Orleans Saints, who have been displaced to the Dallas area since Aug. 28 as Hurricane Ida approached Louisiana’s coast, are set to play their first game at the Superdome this season on Oct. 3 against the New York Giants. Stadium management officials said while final assessments continue, they do no expect the fire will cause any cancellations of events, including the Saints-Giants game.
