MIL to allow limited number of students, staff, general public to games
The third change to the Maui Interscholastic League policy on attendance at sporting events was announced via an email to The Maui News on Wednesday.
The league has added students and school staff members to the list of eligible attendees, along with “a limited amount of the general public.”
Last week, each student-athlete was allowed to have four guests in attendance. The week before that, the league started its week-by-week plan by allowing only home-team fans to attend athletic events.
“A big ‘mahalo’ goes out to all the guests that attended MIL events this past week for your cooperation and the patience shown with all the added protocols and procedures,” the news release sent Wednesday said. “This week the MIL welcomes guests of players as well as a limited number of students and staff members from the participating schools with the number varying depending on the size and capacity of the venue.
“For larger venues, a limited amount of the general public will be allowed to attend the event. All guests, students, staff and general public must be fully vaccinated, mask policies must be followed, social distancing is required, and please stay home if you are sick.”
The news release continued: “There is an admission fee at applicable venues and MIL cards of the schools participating at that event will be accepted. There will be no concession and no food to be brought in at the events. Water is allowed.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, 470 of 800 tickets for Friday night’s Kamehameha Maui at Lahainaluna football game had been sold online, according to athletic director Jon Conrad.
“Please understand that depending on the seating capacity at each venue, the amount of fully vaccinated spectators allowed may be different from one event to the next,” the MIL’s statement Wednesday said. “Some events may also be streamed on the NFHS network (nfhsnetwork.com).
“Proof of full vaccination and proof of ID will be required to enter MIL events which will lead to additional time to get into events. We again thank everyone for their understanding and are excited for the opportunity for more people to see student-athletes perform and compete.”
