Nonprofit to offer courses for teachers

Maui Huliau Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting environmen­tal literacy and leadership among Maui youth, will offer two profession­al developmen­t courses for teachers over the summer.

The three-credit PDE3 courses are open to state Department of Education grades 6-12 teachers of any subject, including counselors and support staff, in Maui County. Both involve virtual or in-person

sessions and lesson plan implementa­tion during the first quarter of the 2023-24 school year.

The first course, “Kukulu Pilina: Strengthen­ing HA through community connection­s,” focuses on the Office of Hawaiian Education’s Na Hopena A‘o or HA framework. It starts June 6 and includes seven, two-hour live Zoom sessions as well as in-person sessions at Noho‘ana Farm and Kipuka Olowalu. The cost is $50 and the registrati­on deadline is Friday. The second course, “En gaging Students in Climate

Action Problem-based Learning,” helps teachers create an inquiry-based climate change lesson plan over the course of six live Zoom sessions in June and July. The course is free and the registrati­on deadline is June 23. The class code is #IS187946.
