Clippers’ Westbrook undergoes surgery on fractured left hand

-

Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook underwent surgery on his fractured left hand Monday, and the team describes his status as week to week.

Westbrook broke his hand Friday in the Clippers’ 140115 victory over the Washington Wizards. The 201617 MVP and nine-time allNBA performer appeared to suffer the injury while trying to poke the ball away from Washington’s Jordan Poole.

“He’ll start rehab, and we’re just going to check on him weekly just to kind of see how he feels once he starts his rehab,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said Monday after the Clippers’ 113-106 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 35-year-old Westbrook had played in every game for the Clippers this season before breaking his hand. He is averaging 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 22.6 minutes this season.

CAVALIERS: Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell will miss at least three more games after treatment for a bone bruise in his left knee on Monday.

Mitchell is averaging 28.0 points per game and career highs in several other categories for the Cavs, who are third in the Eastern Conference. He missed the past two games with what the team described as soreness in his knee.

The Cavs said Mitchell received a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat the injury. He’s been ruled out for games this week against Boston, Atlanta and Minnesota. His status will be reevaluated this weekend, the team said.

RAPTORS: The Toronto Raptors signed Canadian center Kelly Olynyk to a multi-year contract extension Monday, less than a month after acquiring him from Utah in a deal ahead of the trade deadline.

Olynyk’s agent told ESPN that the two-year extension was worth $26.25 million.

Olynyk, 32, is averaging 8.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 59 games with the Jazz and Raptors this season.
