MIL softball: Bears, Na Alii pick up 5-inning victories

The Baldwin and King Kekaulike high school softball teams both earned five-inning wins at Patsy Mink Field on Wednesday.

Bailey Nagasako drove in three runs, and Lahela Painter and Jasmyn Yoshikawa each had two RBIs for the Bears, who improved to 2-0 in Maui Interschol­astic League Division I play.

Nagasako had a two-run double in the third inning and drove in another run in the fourth.

Yoshikawa got the Bears’ game-sealing rally started when she smacked a tworun single in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Shai Brown doubled in a run to make it 10-1, Painter ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule when she singled to right to drive in Brown.

Lennel Olaivar-Sugse got with win in the circle for the Bears, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings.

The Sabers fell to 0-3. In the nightcap, King Kekaulike got its second win of the season by defeating Kamehameha Maui 13-2 in five innings.

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, Na Alii (2-1) recovered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. After scoring again in the third, they broke open the game with eight runs in the fourth.

Taryn Pico started the inning with a triple and then scored on a double from Kaleimaile Garcia. Aki Tamayose followed with an RBI triple and Kamalei Kekona plated another run with a single, all without an out being recorded. Pico eventually came back to the plate and delivered an RBI double that also saw another run score on the throw that gave Na Alii the 11-run cushion that stood up as Trista Otani finished out a complete-game four-hitter in the fifth.

The Warriors dropped to 1-1.
