Car accident takes the life of Lahaina pedestrian
A 68-year-old Lahaina resident lost their life in a pedestrian-vehicle collision Wednesday evening, according to a Maui Police Department press release (MPD).
On April 3, at approximately 8:14 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Honoapiilani Highway, 400 feet north of Keawe Street in Lahaina.
According to the MPD, preliminary investigation has revealed that a pedestrian, dressed in dark clothing, was crossing Honoapiilani Highway west to east outside of a marked crosswalk when a white 2017 Nissan Rogue, traveling southbound, collided with the pedestrian.
As a result of this collision, the pedestrian, a 68-year-old Lahaina female, sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room, where she was subsequently pronounced deceased. (The victim’s identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow her family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends), according to the MPD press release.
The operator and passenger of the Nissan, both 17-year-old Lahaina females, did not report any injuries.
Preliminary investigation has revealed, according to the MPD press release, “The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when she was struck. Both the operator and passenger of the Nissan were reportedly utilizing their seatbelts at the time of the collision. The airbags did not deploy in the vehicle. The involvement of speed, alcohol, or drugs has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing.
According to the MPD, this is Maui County’s second traffic fatality of 2024, compared to two at this point in 2023.
