Blood Bank of Hawaii recognizes legacy donor who inspires the next generation of blood donors

-

WAILUKU—Blood Bank of Hawaii is recognizing a milestone donor’s legacy after three decades of donations. During his tenure, William “Bill” Kinaka made an impressive 162 donations. Although his longterm service to the community as a blood donor has recently come to a close due to heart surgery, he is continuing his commitment to saving lives through his advocacy for blood donation.

“Although I may not be able to donate blood in the future, please be assured that I will continue to promote the outstanding life-saving work of Blood Bank of Hawaii and recruit new donors.” expressed Kinaka. “I’m so proud of my niece who is carrying on our family tradition.”

Kinaka’s commitment to the Maui community and Blood Bank of Hawaii’s mission encouraged him to pass the torch to the next generation. Sharon Nakama, Kinaka’s niece, made her first donation just last week at BBH’s Maui blood drive held at the Cameron Center in Wailuku due to the encouragement of her uncle.

Their family story and dedication to BBH have become an inspiration for many. Over the years, Kinaka estimates that he has encouraged more than 150 people to donate.

Donating blood can have an incredible impact on the community, with each donation a donor can save up to three lives. But it is an ongoing need. Across the state, 150 to 200 donors are needed daily. However, only about two percent of the state’s population donates blood. A single car accident victim may need as many as 100 units of blood. Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, they can only come from people who volunteer to donate their blood. All of Hawaii’s blood donors play an important role in supporting patients across all 18 civilian hospitals in Hawaii.

To participate in future blood drives, to set up a Lifesaver Club or to schedule an appointment call 808-8484770 or check out bbh.org. Those unable to donate but who would like to contribute in other ways can explore volunteer opportunities by contacting volunteer@bbh. org.
