Joint bill aims to phase out and repeal TVRs in the Maui Apartment District heads to the Planning Commission
The County of Maui announced Wednesday, the putting forth a bill to phase out TVRs in the Apartment District, also known as Minatoya List TVRs, according to a press release from the county. The bill will initially go before the Planning Commission for further review.
“Mayor Bissen has directed the Planning Director to transmit a new bill to the Planning Commissions seeking to phase out and repeal the controversial use of TVRs in the Apartment District, which currently allows condos, apartments and planned developments that are not hotels to operate as short-term rentals without any state or county permit. If approved, such TVRs will be phased out and unable to operate as short-term rentals under any legal pathway,” the announcement of the bill from the county states.
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, Lahaina Strong leader Paele Kiakona, Maui County Councilmember Keani Rawlins-Fernandez;
and Mayor’s Lahaina Advisory Team’s Kaliko Storer will hold a media only press conference to announce the bill at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku.
The county said the proposed bill was an unprecedented collaboration among Mayor Richard Bissen, Lahaina Strong grassroots advocacy group leaders, Maui County Councilmember Keani Rawlins-Fernandez and Mayor’s Lahaina Advisory Team, a new proposal sets out to change the course of history when it comes to the landscape of transient vacation rentals (TVRs) in Maui County.
“Last August, Maui County experienced the worst wildfire disaster in modern history that took 101 lives and destroyed thousands of homes, displacing more than 12,000 survivors and exacerbating a pre-existing and complex housing crisis,” the county said in the press release announcing the proposed bill.
