KAHULUI—The Maui Humane Society (MHS) is offering free Good Packs with supplemental pet packs to those displaced by the Lahaina fires of August 8, 2023.

The Good Packs were provided by Greater Good Charities and made possible by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, also known as “the Vodka for the Dog People.” The Good Packs include essential survival and comfort supplies for those in times of crisis. While the Good Packs contain items for humans, the supplemental pet packs contain dog and cat products.

A team of volunteers from Tito’s Handmade Vodka and team members from Greater Good Charities visited MHS’ Pu’unene shelter on February 21, to assemble the Good Packs with supplemental pet packs and assisted with general shelter needs.

The team distributed more than 400 Good Packs at MHS’ Lahaina Pet Resource

Center and those temporarily housed at the Maui Seaside Hotel in Kahului. Good Packs were distributed to displaced pet owners, as well as those who intend to adopt pets in the future.

“The people of Lahaina have lost their homes, their community, and their loved ones, both humans and animals,” Maui Humane Society’s Chief of Operations, Nikki Russell said. “Providing these Good Packs with essential supplies is one of many ways we can support those who are caring for their pet in temporary hotel housing, those who plan to adopt again in the future, or those who are grieving the loss of a pet.”

Good Packs with supplemental pet packs include items for humans such as blankets, socks, toiletries, and personal hygiene products, as well as pet food, treats, toys, supplies, and animal first aid kits. There are roughly 100 additional Good Packs available, which can be picked up at MHS’ Lahaina Pet Resource Center, open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. MHS’ Humane Enforcement Resource Officer will also distribute to community members in need while supplies last.

Nine months after the devastating fires in Lahaina, MHS is continuing to assist affected pet owners and plans to continue this support for years to come. More than 100 pets are currently living with their displaced families in temporary hotel housing, in addition to countless others now spread across Maui. Those in need are provided with free or low-cost veterinary care, resources for pet-friendly housing, food, supplies, behavioral support, off-island travel, and more.
