Mendo 50K Run coming
The annual Mendocino Coast 50K Run is scheduled for Saturday, April 18. The event begins and ends at the Big River parking area just south of the town of Mendocino. The course goes through the Jackson Demonstration State Forest and has five checkpoints along the route. As in past races, the organizers wish to staff the start/ finish and checkpoints with HAM radio operators to provide information to officials on race status and safety issues since there is no other form of communication capable of monitoring the race.
The race will begin at 7 a.m. at the start point and normally lasts about 9.5 hours. The checkpoints are staffed in succession as the race progresses with the start point and station one staffed at 7 a.m. Organizers are looking for six or seven volunteers who are willing to monitor the race. Ham radio operators have enjoyed it in past races, and it also provides an oppor- tunity to practice the skills of operating on radio net.
In addition, organizers are also looking for ham radio operators who would be willing to accompany the sweep on a leg of the race. Since the sweep cannot pass any of the competing racers, the sweep will run the race at the slowest pace.
If you are a runner and a ham radio operator, this would be an opportunity to use multiple skills. For more information about the event, go to https:// mendocinoultra.com/.
