Future of OB services

The Mendocino Coast Healthcare District Board of Directors will meet in special section tonight, Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the patient registrati­on lobby. The sole agenda item is a study session “regarding the Future of OB Services on the Mendocino Coast,” led by board President Jessica Grinberg. On Jan. 3, Dr. Zoe Berna and Dr. Robin Serrahn led a community forum on labor and delivery services at Fort Bragg Town Hall. A report on the forum was published in the Jan. 9 print and online editions of the newspapers.

Measure C Oversight Committee meets

The Mendocino Coast Healthcare District Measure C Taxpayer Oversight Committee will meet this Friday, Jan. 24, 2 p.m., in the Redwoods Room. Agenda items include an annual report to the board by interim MCDH CEO Wayne Allen. Interim CFO Doran Hammett will review fiscal year 2019 expenditur­es and proposed fiscal year 2020 expenditur­es. Committee members Robert Becker, Chairwoman Myra Beals, Steve Antler, Lea Christense­n, Kathy Charters, Jim Hurst and Kitty Burning review and endorse expenditur­es of parcel tax money.

Fruit Tree Pruning

The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is holding a fruit tree pruning workshop Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. This workshop will help you optimize performanc­e from your fruit trees, according to your own needs and the specific environmen­t in which the trees are growing. Little League registrati­on

Registrati­on ifor Fort Bragg Little League closes on Feb. 8. No late registrati­ons, no exceptions. Early bird registrati­on ended Dec. 31. Crab, Wine and Beer Days

Tickets are now on sale for Crab, Wine and Beer Days, Mendocino Coast Clinics’ annual fundraiser on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb.1. The Friday night event features three dinner seatings at the historic Pentecost Hall in Fort Bragg where people can enjoy a cioppino dinner prepared by an all-volunteer kitchen crew and served by MCC’s staff. The following afternoon at noon in the big white tent at the corner of Main and Spruce streets in Fort Bragg, attendees can enjoy a crab cake cookoff and wine tasting competitio­n where Mendocino County chefs craft thousands of crab cakes to

Science Talk

Adam Ratner, a marine scientist and educator with The Marine Mammal Center, will inspire people to take action on climate through a focus on solutions and hope rather than data and fear. On Friday, Jan. 31, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Down Town Noyo Center in Fort Bragg, come get a dose of optimism from The Marine Mammal Center, the world’s largest marine mammal hospital and a global leader in conservati­on, as Ratner talks about the climate solutions happening around the world that provide the sense of empowermen­t and agency people need to tackle the climate issue. Admission is free.

HazMobile returns

The HazMobile household hazardous waste collection team returns to Fort Bragg Disposal, 219 Pudding Creek Road, on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dangerous chemicals that can’t go in the trash are accepted by the HazMobile for recycling or special disposal. Individual­s can dispose of up to 15 gallons of combined household hazardous waste. The countywide schedule and more informatio­n are available by calling 4689704, or at MendoRecyc­le.org.

Democratic Club meets

Reports from two presidenti­al campaign workers and a presentati­on on climate by Doug Nunn will be featured at the Thursday, Feb. 6, meeting of the Coast Democratic Club at the meeting room at Harbor Lite in Fort Bragg. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6. Local Mendocino County organizers of presidenti­al campaigns have been invited to speak. Please park in the vacant lot across the street on Franklin Street.

Nunn’s slide show, “The Politics of Climate,” treats the history of environmen­talism in the U.S., the breaking of a longtime consensus on National Parks and conservati­on in the Reagan administra­tion, the hiding of evidence of climate change by fossil fuel industries and denialism. He will explore the Green New Deal, Cap and Trade, and carbon taxes, then review candidates’ platforms on climate change.

Free walking groups

Start the New Year moving your body more by participat­ing in a walking group! In the Mendocino area, an ongoing walking group meets Wednesdays at 3 p.m. at the trailhead of the North Big River Road. A new Fort Bragg walking group meets the first and third Monday of the month at 10 a.m. in the parking lot between the Beachcombe­r Motel and Surf and Sand Lodge. They will be walking north on the Haul Road. These free groups are funded under a SNAP-Ed grant through Public Health. How not to diet

Every month seems to bring a trendy new diet or weight-loss fad, yet obesity rates continue to rise — and with it a growing number of diseases and health problems. It’s time for a different approach. The “How Not To Diet” class is held at Preston Hall in Mendocino on four consecutiv­e Saturdays starting Feb. 15 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This free class is taught by nutrition educator Petra Schulte and funded under a SNAPEd grant through Public Health.
