Niners, palindromes … tournament season!

-

Sunday, 02/02/2020, is called a palindrome, meaning the date can be read forwards or backwards and it means the same thing. This is the first time this has happened in 909 years.

Yes lost, 49’ers lost, yes. I guess the previous sentence could also be called a palindrome but probably not really. On the North Coast there are probably lots of us that are disappointed with the results of this year’s Super Bowl, but I’m sure there are numbers of North Coasters who are pleased with the results. As golfers, we are used to being pleased and disappointed many times on any given round, from putt to putt, from shot to shot and from round to round. We are always looking forward to our next 18, and 49’er fans, we are only getting started. Wait until next year.

And we golfers only have to wait another month until tournament play returns to the Little River Golf Course. The first organized tournament of the year is the Little River Men’s Club famous St. Patty’ Day Scramble, scheduled for Sunday, March 3. Next on the list is a high school event on Thursday, March 12, followed by another high school tournament on March 19.

On March 21 and 22, a private event is occupying the course. This information as well as all the scheduled tournament events for the rest of the year can be found at littleriverinn.com. This is a great website to access golf events, but also to learn some history of the course and course details. There is even a shot of the wily ol’ pro, Wayne Salyards, helping a golfer on the driving range.

It has been noted that a few Stableford players have played every Stableford day in the month of January. The Stableford days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. It has also been noted that in the memory of Stableford players, this has never happened before in January.

Long-range forecasts project drought, drouth in Scottish, and there-in lies the dilemma. As golfers, we like no rain — golfing weather. But as homeowners or renters, rain is necessary to replenish our water supply and the golf course needs rain for irrigation.

Generally, the coast needs a minimum of 30 inches of rain for replenishment. Many of us remember playing the course when there was only enough storage to water the greens. Remember the terrific bounces and long rolls we would get on the dry, hardened fairways? We can only wait and see what the weather and the 49’ers will bring.
