Elk loses Lynda Aubrey

- By Kristi Hahn

Elk Loses Lynda

Last week, Elk lost another precious member of its community. Lynda Aubrey had been a warrior in fighting cancer for the past few years. In her life, she was also a warrior mother, a warrior educator, and a warrior activist.

Elk sends condolences and love to her sons, Aarron and Sabin, and their families. We will all miss Lynda’s light, love, and generous spirit. Jane Corey, who worked with Lynda for many years at the Greenwood School, sent this remembrance:

“We hired Lynda Aubrey to be my classroom aide the year my twin sons were to enter Greenwood School kindergarten 1986. Her three children, Rebekkah, Aarron and Sabin, were in the ‘big kids’ classroom next door. I had the pleasure of teaming with her for 17 years. Before the school centennial in 1998, we had alumni visit and tell their stories to the students.”

Alum Eleanor Sverko had attended Greenwood School during the Depression and was asked by a student if she had ever wanted to be famous. Her reply:

“The important thing is to see what needs to get done and do it. That is Lynda in a nutshell. With kind heart, creativity, intelligence, and courage she embraced life. She was an inspiring worker for social justice and the environment. She was an excellent teacher and a great listener to kids’ tales of joys and sorrows. Though she suffered great sorrow at the loss of her daughter, she remained open-hearted and generous-spirited. Her years since her cancer diagnosis cannot

have been easy but she did what was needed in order to survive as long as possible and have time with her family. She is greatly missed. Let her courage and hope be an inspiration to all of us and her memory, a blessing.”

Community Notes

Free Breakfast and Lunch for All MUSD Students: Please note that all students are eligible for free meals. Meals can be picked up at the Greenwood School on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 1 p.m. On Monday and Wednesday, breakfast and lunch are provided from Tuesday and Thursday, as well.

Artists’ Collective Gallery Show for September: Sondra Sula is showing all new work in a show entitled “Art in the Time of COVID”. Her “Little Souls” are small, framed found-object assemblages created in an intuitive manner. “When I make a piece, I believe the completed art will beckon someone’s soul, and that person will eventually find it. During

the creative process I just ‘know’ when an object or its placement is right or wrong. I rely heavily on this intuitive sense, this spiritual connection to ‘The Flow’.

Sula has a BFA in painting and photography and has been represented by galleries in Chicago, Santa Fe, and here on the Northern California Coast. She is also the author of “Meditations on Mendocino” and other books that can be found at the Fort Bragg library or online. The Artists Collective Gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 707-877-1128.
