Got Skins in the game

- Larry Miller

Wednesday, Oct. 14, playing on our lovely Little River Golf Course, the Skins bunch had some winners. Eight players participated and five won money. Money!

According to research, there are at least 80 slang terms for money. So availing ourselves of some of those terms, we can say Richard Berta won some “bacon.” Winning some bacon in the skins game means you won a skin or you scored lower than anyone else on a given hole and usually that means you birdied the hole.

We can go on to say Don Romelli won some “moolah” with Woody Woodruff raking in some “greenbacks” and Dennis Hartsock settling for some “scratch.” Bill Gibney dove into the game plundering the field winning two skins and also winning the lowest putt total which gave him an additional “wad.” Our collective hearts must go out to the three golfers who didn’t harvest any “cabbage.” Don Romelli won his” bread” driving hole 18 a four-par. Don missed his eagle putt a bit to the right but sunk the birdie for his skin.

Jim Ehlers and Jim Corsar showed up early that Wednesday to get a loosening nine before the main event. Jim Ehlers came out swinging in the warm-up nine scoring three pars and a bogie on the first four. In the main event that changed to Jim scoring 6, 6, 6 and 6 on the first four, which caused a bad word to fall out of Jim’smouth and go rolling across the fairway into the rough.

The two Jims were not among the smacker winners, or in Scotland (where Jim Corsar originated) not among the “lolly winners.” Lolly is money in Scottish. But dinna fash yerself (Don’t worry yourself) — you’ll do better next time … or not. Golf has no conscience.

The last round I played was a classic Peter Barg, “I’ll sell all those clubs for $5 and throw in the cart for nothing,” type of round. Peter uttered that comment after struggling for 16 holes. Peter parred the 16th so didn’t sell his clubs. All it takes is one good hole.

My round was terrible, the only redeeming part was paring 18, so now I have to go back and play again.
