Ocean Wave Quilters

-

We’ve had so much fun sharing our Ocean Wave Quilters’ activities with you. As this will be our last column for a while, we want to tell you about two upcoming events that we think you’ll enjoy!

The first is our “On the Fence” Quilt Show to be held on Saturday, June 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in lieu of the annual Fort Bragg Quilt Show usually held at Dana Gray Elementary School. We’ll be hanging quilts on the fence surrounding the Veteran’s Memorial Building at the corner of Laurel and Harrison Streets. We expect 100 or more quilts to be provided by our Ocean Wave Quilters, some of which will be for sale. We’ll be selling tickets for our two opportunity quilts that will be hanging right at the corner; the winner of the raffle will be named at 3:30 p.m. that same day. Winner need not be present.

Half a dozen vendors have signed up to participate, selling jewelry, fabric, pillowcases, baby quilts and other fun items. Raffle baskets will be displayed for the community to have a chance to win. This annual quilt show is the major fundraiser for the Ocean Wave Quilters and Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise (both 501(c)3 non-profit organizations) and supports the community projects of both clubs. This event is free; no entry fee will be charged, but donations are always appreciated. Adherence to COVID precautions will be required. We hope you’ll put the date on your calendar and come enjoy our beautiful quilts!

The second event we’re working on is our Iconic Mendocino Building Challenge. In July of 2019, one of our quilters, Cindi Jo Willey, issued a challenge to the members to make an 18” x 18” quilt of one of Mendocino’s iconic buildings, to be completed by July of 2020. Ten of our members accepted the challenge. Well, obviously a pandemic interfered and we didn’t meet our original deadline, but we now have more than two dozen of these amazing quilts ready to display.

Included among the buildings we’re representing are Albert Brown House, Blair House, Blue Door Inn, Corners of the Mouth, Crown Hall, Dick’s Place, Digeridoo Inn, Ford House, Gallery Books, Harvest at Mendosa’s, Henry Jarvis House, Highlight Gallery, Joshua Grindle Inn, Kelley House, MacCallum House, Masonic Hall, Mendocino Hotel, Ocean Quilts, Odd Fellows Hall, the old Fire Station, Out of this World, Presbyterian Church, Temple Kwan Tai, Whistlestop, and one of the iconic water towers.

We’re working with the Mendocino Art Center, the Willits Center for the Arts, and a couple of other local venues to schedule a show once they have reopened to the public. We are also anxiously waiting to hear if Pacific International Quilt Festival (held in Santa Clara, CA) will be holding an in person show in October; our display would be entered into the New Quilts of Northern California exhibit there.

As soon as we have dates confirmed for these displays, we’ll distribute the information via our website at oceanwavequilters.com and through articles submitted to the Fort Bragg Advocate-News and The Mendocino Beacon. You can always contact us through info@oceanwavequilters.com or via our Facebook page facebook.com/Mendocinoquilters. We thank you for your interest and your support!
