Greenwood/Elk: Community Notes
Dave and Hunter of the Mendocino County Bookmobile will be here on February 3rd and 17th from 1:00-1:30 at the Greenwood Beach parking lot. Order your next reads online at mendolibrary.org, and they will deliver them to you!
Postmaster, Judy Bonney, has recently reinstated a tradition started by our former postmaster, Melissa Hays, and is featuring local artists’ work on the wall that can be seen through the Dutch door window of the post office lobby. Recently, a lovely group of watercolor paintings by Pierrot Esnol has gone up. Pierrot is better known to us all as a talented potter, but these little gems are not to be missed. Before Pierrot, the featured artist was Loraine Toth, whose impressive drawings of various historical buildings of Elk were on display. Make sure you take a peek next time you pick up your mail.
Many of you have heard by now that Queenie slipped and broke her ankle doing laundry almost right after wrapping up her 2021 season. So, unfortunately, she is spending her winter break healing up but is anxious to get back behind the stove. She is hoping for a late March or early April opening. Stay tuned and send her lots of healing thoughts!
January is, traditionally, the fundraising month for Mendocino Coast Clinics. Again, due to COVID restrictions, MCC cannot safely and in good conscience hold their annual Crab Days’ Cioppino Dinner & Crab Cake Cook-Off events. Yet, spurred with hope, Executive Director, Lucresha Renteria, is excited to announce three new outreach programs, “Outside Our Walls.” These are “MCC Goes to School” — an after-school program in cooperation with FBUSD that will create a space for teens to feel safe gathering, seek confidential, accessible care, and ‘hang-out’ in a fun, learning environment, MAT (Medication Assisted Treatment) offers professional care to those suffering from opioid addiction at no charge and at an independent site, and the “Street Medicine” program has recently been enhanced by a grant to expand services by a physician, to our homeless population at the Hospitality Center. This will include medical treatment and essential supplies. If you would like to support these programs, please visit mendocinocoastclinics.org/donate/ to contribute. Or mail your check to MCC at 205 South Street, Fort Bragg, 95437. Questions? Please email Tawny at events@mccinc.org or leave a voicemail at 707961-3463.
And as a reminder, COVID testing and vaccination schedules at MCC have recently changed. Vaccines for all ages 12 and up, first, second, and boosters, are given every Tuesday from 3:00 — 6:00 pm in the drive-thru tent at 205 South Street. Appointments are not required. Free, non-symptomatic testing is offered every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 am — 1:00 pm. If you have symptoms and need to be tested asap, please call 707-9641251.
