The Stableford event

-

A lovely historic trio of golfers showed up for last Friday’s, January 28th, Stableford event. All three players used to or still work at the Little River Course. Bob Fish, now residing in Arbuckle, used to be the Pro-Shop manager several years ago. Bob and his wife spent a couple of days as guests at the Little River Inn, with Bob joining the Stableford bunch on Friday. Also joining the group was Tim McLaughlin, currently residing in Cloverdale. Tim used to work on the golf course and help out at the Inn’s kitchen. Terry Stratton was the third member of the trio and, as we all know, is the present golf course maintenance supervisor. All three amigos once-upon-a-time worked at the course simultaneously, which allowed them to play golf together. All three are good golfers. How did they play last Friday? They probably would rather not talk about it, but they did have a great time catching up. Last Friday, there were no outstanding players, but Chuck Alegrini and Jim Ehlers managed to play well enough to tie for top individual winners, racking up 35 Stableford points. Chuck drew Bill Speake, who had 34 points, for first place partners, and Jim Drawing Matt Howard for second place partners. Hurry back, Bob, and always nice to see you, Tim, on your weekly trip over from Cloverdale.

Another historic event came out of the memory of Scott “The Full Deitz Man” Deitz. Sometime in the mid-nineties, Scott remembers walking 72 holes. Is this where the term doing the full Deitz” originated? Doing a full Deitz is walking eighteen holes of golf. I know most know that. Walking 72 holes is doing four full Deitz’s. Scott remembers it was the longest day of the year. Bill Speake, then still working as a teacher at the Mendocino Grammar School, accompanied Scott walking the first 18 holes. The pair started at daybreak then Bill had

to join a workshop at the school. While Bill was away, Scott walked another 36 holes. Bill returned after the workshop and walked another 18 holes with Scott. They finished at sunset. Scott remembers shooting three 88’s and a 78. Nice day guys.

If you are a 49’rs fan, you are not happy with last Sunday’s game results. If you are a Ram’s fan, you are happy with the results. If you are Lyndy Peters in high school football, you played tight end on offense and outside linebacker on defense. If you are Bill Gibney, you played high school center on defense and offense. If you are David Jones, high school football was not your thing.
