Pets of the week: Roo and Gary

-

Dog: Meet our newest member of the MCHS family, Roo. She lived in a Texas animal shelter and was 72hours away from euthanasia when she was scooped up and eventually brought to us. This 55-pound large mixed breed is such a cutie, and you first notice her big bunny-like ears. Roo is very sweet with people; her favorite thing is cuddling and playing with her toys. Sometimes she can have separation anxiety, so we are looking for a loyal owner who can give her all the love and attention she deserves. It would be helpful to find someone who can work on training, although she already knows basic commands and is food motivated. Roo needs someone with the love and time to give her the best home.

Cat: When you visit Gary at the shelter, you’ll find him in private deluxe condo accommodations, so be sure to ask the shelter staff where to go. This big, soft, gentle cat is often coiled up in his cave, but he likes attention and will slither out to say hi. Gary is a loving and gentle cat who would be a great fit in a calm household where you’re looking for more of a window lounger than a curtain destroyer. You should know that Gary has FIV, an immune deficiency disease that is not transmissible to humans but can be passed to other cats by biting and scratching. FIV is extremely common, and many cats live long, healthy lives, but some can have health problems because of their depressed immune systems. It’s also not suitable for Gary to live with an FIV-negative cat. We have much more information about living with FIV and caring for an FIV+ cat, our vet staff can answer any questions you may have, and you can also do some reading at Best Friends and Cornell’s Feline Health Center. Don’t let his diagnosis scare you off!
