Rack ‘em up:
A pair of Reno pool players came to visit Fort Bragg this past week. Playing pool at the Welcome Inn, the two stood out, and it was somehow obvious they were from out of town. Ashlee Saville has visited Fort Bragg since she was five and brought Taylor Prater. Taylor is the pool player, and Ash is the dancer. Together though, they are an unbeatable pair, and it was fun to have them around as they played pool and danced to the music.
When finished with what must be some new Nevada-style dancing pool game, they engaged in small talk about the sights and sounds of today’s Fort Bragg. Cozy and friendly is one way they described the town.
Staying at the Beachcomber Inn and having eaten breakfast at Eggheads and Cafe 1 so far, they were still having a good time. Later in the day, it was Silver’s by the Wharf (their favorite) that saw their money, as did Noyo Harbor Inn and Noyo River Grill. “We ate every single meal of our stay at local restaurants,” said Taylor. They discovered, however, that coming from the Biggest Little City to little Fort Bragg, there were few entertainments here beyond Ocean views or Beach walking. Of course, Ashley misses the Bowling Alley, and it was a favorite place for fun with family and friends. And so they went searching for something to do. When they came to Welcome Inn, though, they stayed, they played, and they danced “in cozy little Fort Bragg.”

Visit Fort Bragg Pool League sponsors: Angelina’s Grille & Bar, Golden West Saloon, Milano Hotel and Bar, or Welcome Inn: all maintain a schedule of Fort Bragg Pool League players and teams. Look to the list for someone you might know and find where they are playing. You might join their team, make new friends, or watch 8-ball games as they unfold. The League plays Tuesday at 7 pm ending before 10 pm. Tournaments, if held, are posted near pool tables. Anyone can enter.
CUE TIP » If you are new at playing pool, or your pool game is on life support, go to Simple Town.
That is where you use just the cue ball. Play the cue ball by hitting the exact center, from diamond to diamond lengthways, on a pool table. Does it come straight back? If it comes back to the right, it is because you hit the right of center. It will return to the left if you hit the left of center. You will learn to hit the center ball if you practice this simple shot. Remember, after the shot, keep your head down while your bridge hand and cue stick remain on the table, waiting for the ball to return straight back and re-hit the cue tip. This will teach you Rule # 1. Keeping your head and body still after the shot. Staying still after the shot definitely increases accuracy. Try this simple drill and find for yourself if you are hitting the center on the cue ball. It is a fact that any off-center hit on a cue ball causes deflection and makes it more difficult to be accurate.
