Speech Pathology now available on the Mendocino Coast

- Staff report

After more than seven years of being unable to offer Speech Pathology on the Mendocino Coast, Adventist Health Mendocino Coast is pleased to introduce Kristen Young, M.S., CCC SLP specializing in Speech Pathology. Growing up in the Midwest, Kristen relocated to Northern California almost 20 years ago and has been right here on the Mendocino Coast for 15 of those years!

Kristen brings over 13 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist, treating patients of every age (infants through adults). She specializes in speech production, expressive & receptive language, fluency, augmentative & alternative communication, cognition, voice & resonance, and swallowing. She will offer inpatient and outpatient Speech & Language Services here on the coast.

Kristen has a Master of Science in Communication Disorders and is a Licensed Speech Language Pathologist with the California Speech Language Pathology & Audiology Board (SLPAB). She also holds a certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA).

“It’s the joy I see in my patients and their families that I love the most about being a Speech Language Pathologist. When a child can say “mama” for the first time or a patient can sit down and enjoy their favorite food for the first time in a long time, or when a patient is finally feeling confident in their speech all because of the work we did together, that is what I love the most, and that is what keeps me doing what I do,” says Kristen.

Kristen lives in Mendocino with her partner Ford, their two boys, a small pup Bentley and a giant cat JJ. When she isn’t working with patients, she enjoys spending time outdoors in her garden, at the river, or enjoying the beautiful Mendocino Coastline. She also spends time doing screen print textiles in her home studio. When asked why she chose to live here on the Mendocino Coast, she replied, “It is a hard tossup on which I love more, the gorgeous terrain or the sweet small-town way of life that this community offers. Living in a small, rural community lends itself to a level of connectedness like no other. This wonderful balance exists between having wide open spaces to roam and always seeing someone you know wherever you go. Small-town pride is real, resulting in more community members caring about each other in a way that fosters thoughtful actions, ideas, and intentions.”

We’re proud to be able to offer this service to our community so that our community members don’t have to travel out of town for this specialized service.

A primary care provider referral should be faxed to 707-961-4900 to access care. For more information, please call (707) 961-4670
