Butch shoots an 82
Last Wednesday, May 17th, Butch Carlstadt, ninety years of age, triple-bogeyed the 17th hole. Tripled it. Took a seven and yet shot eight strokes under his age, an eightytwo. Wow, Butch, that is impressive. Statistically, .00089 percent of golfers shoot their age—nine golfers out of a billion. You’re one of the nine out of a billion Butch. The Los Angeles Lakers have better odds, one percent, of beating the Denver Nuggets than an amateur golfer has in shooter their age. According to the Guinness World Records, the oldest man to ever shoot his age was a gentleman named C. Arthur Thompson. He was a Canadian golfer who was 103 and shot a 103 on the Canadian Uplands Course in 1973. Keep on playing, Butch.
On May 26th, a large contingent of local golfers will be headed to the Annual Bill Gibney-inspired Fall River Mills Golf Tournament. The practice round will be on the 26th. The official tournament days are the 27th and 28th. The Fall River Mills golf course is located in Northeastern California in the Fall River area. The course has a 74.7/134 rating from the black tees, a 72.7/132 from the blue tees, and a 72.9/122 rating from the white tees. In the NCGA course rating system, the first number, the 74.7 black tees, means that the score is a scratch, there is no handicap, and the player should shoot on the course. The second number, 134, represents the degree of difficulty for an average golfer. It is called the slope rating and ranges from 55 to 155. The higher the number, the more difficult the course. The Little River course from the blue tees has a 68.2/120 rating, which, according to the rating system, makes it easier than the Fall River Mills course. Some of the highest slope ratings in our general
area are the Clear Creek Golf Club in Carson City, NV, with a 155 slope. Wolf Creek Golf Club, located in Mesquite, NV, has a 154 slope. The Mayacama Golf Club in Santa Rosa, CA, which some of our locals may have played, is rated at 153. The McCloud Golf Course, which I grew up playing and is fortyeight miles to the west of Fall River, has a rating of 69.2/119 front nine and 69.8/122 back nine. This rating is similar to the Little River Course. The McCloud Course is also a ninehole layout played twice. Like Little River, there are a few different tee positions front nine/back nine. If you get a chance, I recommend playing the McCloud Course. It is lovely with Mt. Shasta observing you on practically every hole. Have a great time up there.
