-

The results are in for the 37th Annual Aquathon, which featured swimmers, young and old, who swam laps on Saturday, December 2, 2023, to raise funds for the second-grade program. The Mendocino Coast, Recreation and Park District holds this event each year so that all second graders along the Mendocino Coast can take free swim lessons with their school classes. This year, twelve swimmers brought in a total of $7,509 with pledges from families and friends.

Harvest Market and Pippi's Longstockings donated the awards to the top three adults and youth, bringing in the most pledged money. In the adult division, Lee Rider turned in $2,178 for first place; Eve Oliphant brought in $1,106 for second place; and Gary Krage raised $824 for third place.

In the youth division, Simon Winslow turned in $180 for first place, Henry Becker raised $130 for second place, and Finn Becker turned in $100 for third place. Kathy Marden's water exercise class brought in $1,631 from pledges they got for walking on the Lazy River. The total amount turned in by all swimmers and walkers was $9,140.

Other events contributing to the second-grade swim program were The Silent Auction, which cost $1,886, and Business Sponsors, who contributed $250 each to the Aquathon. Also, Police Chief Cervenko presented a check for $1,000 from their fund, which is used for youth programs.

Volunteers Kathy Marden, Kathy Shafsky, and Marilyn Leroy manned the desk during the Aquathon to keep track of the swimmers and those who pledged them.

Helping make this program a fun event were refreshments provided by Purity Store and individuals.

All swimmers who brought in at least $50 will get a free t-shirt designed by Jane Oglesby.

Many thanks go out to all who contributed to the Aquathon, including swimmers and walkers, those who pledged them, the business sponsors, and those who donated to the Silent Auction.
